What you need for a hike

When you are getting ready to go on a hike, you need to start with a good pair of shoes, something with ankle support. I prefer a hiking boot but, I have done hikes in tennis shoes The best thing is a waterproof hiking boot to keep your feet dry. You need something to carry water in for your hike - a water bottle or canteen will work for this - some backpacks even have a bladder in them for water. You also need a first aide kit in your backpack The type of backpack you need depends on what you like and what you need to carry.

They have backpacks for your waist that are small, then day backpacks, an internal frame backpack or external frame backpack that you can carry supplies for a hike for a week or more. For a day hike my suggestion is a small backpack or a waist pack (fanny pack). I would have a compass (even if you have a GPS), a knife ( I have a Leatherman), a signal mirror, an extra pair socks, and a hand towel. Some optional items are a shirt, Fire starter (flint), some snacks (beef jerky, granola bar, fruit), maybe some gum or candy. You also need a map of the area. Carry a map even if you use a GPS, it might break or you might lose it or the battery might just die and then what. That is where the map and compass come in handy.

Internal frame backpack

A Internal Frame backpack is a backpack that has a aluminum or fiberglass frame to help distribute the weight across your back. They have several compartments and plenty of places to strap things on the backpack. Internal Frame backpacks are normally used for hiking, or long trips. Although lots of people use Internal frame backpacks for just an overnight trip. Most have room to carry a sleeping Bag, and sleeping Pad. Some have special places to put Rifles, trekking poles, axe, or fishing pole. Others have Hydration bladders in them to give you a drink while your on the move.

High Mountain Discount Camping Supply

Sunday, May 15, 2011

One of the great memories families have together is spending time in the great outdoors. Some planning ahead and shopping at a camping supply store for accessories can save a lot of time finding everything you need. As kids, one can remember friends coming over or going to a friend’s house, to camp out in the backyard and counting the days to taking off on a real camping trip. The country is blessed with thousands of places to go camping. Kids come home from school wanting to join the Boy Scouts of America and camping is a big part of the Boy Scouts.

Mark Teague, owner of the online store, High Mountain Discount Camping Supply, grew up spending weekends with the Boy Scouts of America and the Royal Ambassadors and went on many hunting trips to boot. He has hiked on the Appalachian Trail. When Mark's son was in the Boy Scouts, Mark and his wife Colleen helped out as Den Leader and Assistant Scoutmaster at Troop 203 and 323. They went on many camping trips with the Boy Scouts. They assisted other boys and their parents on what to buy for camping trips. They would help with coastal clean-up and Eco restoration projects He is a active Geocacher, and thinks that it is a good way to get out on a hike. They spend many hours out in the woods even if it is just a short hike in the Cypress Creek Well Fields.

His dad started the Friendly Gun Shop in Tampa, FL, where he helped his dad. Mark opened High Mountain Discount Camping Supply to help people to find the best camping gear they can buy. You can find backpacks to crossbows at the Teague's online camping discount store. It is a natural extension of the family's passion for the outdoors. High Mountain Discount Camping Supply is based in Central Florida. The local favourite place to get outdoors is the Conner Preserve. It's in Land O' Lakes, in an area set aside for water management since 2003. The landscape includes marshes, cypress sloughs, pine flatwoods and some steep sand hill ridges. It’s a great area for horseback riding, hiking, camping, and even model airplane flying.

Cypress Creek Well Fields

The Cypress Creek Well Fields is a great place to hike. The address is 8720 Pump Station Road
Land O’ Lakes, FL 34639. It is a 7400 acres track of land that has two paved roads. One runs east & west and is named  Pump Station Road and one that off to the north called swiftmud RD. These are the only paved roads here. Cypress Creek Well Field is an important source of water for the Tampa Bay area and is run by Tampa Bay Water (TBW).Cypress Creek runs into the Hillsborough River. Within the property, the creek threads its way through an expanse of cypress and hardwood forests. Slash pine, longleaf pine and palmettos. This type of area is  known as Florida flatwoods.

Bicycling and
Inline Skating

  • 5 miles of paved and unpaved cycling on designated or marked trails.
  • Use only marked trails.
  • Florida law requires bicyclists under 16 to wear helmets.

Camping

  • No camping on the north end

Equestrian Use

  • Riders are required to stay on marked trails.
  • Each rider must carry proof of horse’s current negative Coggins test.
  • Florida law requires equestrians under 16 to wear helmets.

Fishing

  • Along Cypress Creek during high-water periods.
  • Man-made ponds located in southern portion of property.

Hiking

  • Paved road available (Pump Station Road & Swiftmud Road).
  • Several miles of dirt roads & trails .

Picnic Facilities

  • I have not seen any tables in this area.
This area is is great. It is getting more popular all the time most people keep to the paved roads. although there is miles of unpaved roads to explore. Deer are plentiful as are turkeys. The only way to get in to the property is off of Ehren cutoff. Park outside the gate. There is a gate at Quail Hallow Blv. but no parking is available there.

Conner Preserve

Another great place to hike is the is the Conner Preserve. It is 2980 acres in Central Pasco County. The preserve offers a stunning landscape of steep sandhill ridges, expansive marshes, dense cypress sloughs and lush pine flatwoods. Primary access is off SR 52 on south side of road about 3.5 miles east of US 41. It is open from sunrise to sunset. There is a Portable toilet available at main entrance. No water available. There is also Portable toilet and nonpotable water available at Bay City Flyers model airplane field.

It is just to your right as you come down the main road. There is a Primitive campsites, each equipped with picnic table and fire ring, off main trail in eastern portion of preserve. The Preserve is open for Hiking, Bicycling, Equestrian, Camping, Picnicing. There is 16 miles of Hiking only trails. I have seen Deer, Turkeys, Tortoises. Sand Hill Cranes are also seen there. There are some great old oak hammocks. A great place to cool off for a while. There are numerous cypress heads around. I found hundreds of cow bones around from when the area was used as a ranch. Some of the surrounding area is used for pasture so do not jump fences.

There are lots of sand hills around and elevation changes. You can sit up on a hill and watch the Deer cross a field. As you come in you can see grass fields on the right. I have seen Deer in there several times when I have been there.
